Creating a Likes Culture

Creating a Likes Culture
By Ryan McCrary

KALAMA, Wash. – We interrupt today’s social scrolling for this important update: with all the economic challenges facing us today there are two constant truths.

  1. Arizona Iced Tea is still (!!) 99 cents
  2. “Likes” on your favorite social media platforms are still (checks notes) free!

Anyone who has ever worked to create social media content knows this is a constant struggle. You spend the time to plan and prepare your post. You manipulate the photo or video elements, you devise the wording of the post and then select the hashtags.

Once the “send” button is clicked then the wait begins. How will this post be received? Will it resonate? Will people “like” it and “share” it? As much as we may protest that it “doesn’t matter” at the end of the day we all check to see how the post is doing.

Having worked on dozens of social media accounts for sports teams and a couple social media influencers I can tell you it truly doesn’t matter what kind of “reach” or follower count you may have… everybody checks and stresses about “likes” and engagement. Everybody.

Over the last two years when face-to-face human interaction dwindled, I made it a priority to “like” and share the content that I was consuming and enjoying. I placed a priority on liking and sharing content of friends, colleagues and family first and foremost.

Public Service Announcement: Kim Kardashian does not care whether you “like” and share her 15th photo of the day featuring yet another handbag worth more than your car.

Aunt Rose on the other hand would really appreciate you liking her latest baking triumph. Give a double tap on cousin Eddie’s latest skateboard trick.

By celebrating and liking what your friends and family are sharing you are taking the first steps to creating a “culture of likes”, which is very on trend regardless of your brand.

Now if you’ll excuse me I have some scrolling and likes to give. After all, they’re still free!

Thanks once again to all who have read and commented on my blogs so far. It is much appreciated!
