Thankful Thursday | December 29, 2022

WRITE THIS WAY
Hello and welcome to yet another special holiday edition of Thankful Thursday. With 2022 down to its last few hours I would like to congratulate each and every one of you for making it through another challenging year. Some days were clearly easier than others.

A Thankful Public Service Announcement: During this holiday season please check in with your loved ones. If you are thinking about someone you haven’t seen or talked to in a while, reach out with a text or a call. You just never know how much it is needed during a time of year that can be awash in emotion.

Now, time to let the good news flow.

LIVES LIVED WELL
Just before posting today’s Thankful I saw the news alert that Brazilian football legend Pelé had passed away at the age of 82 after a long cancer battle. The words “legend” and “icon” can be overused, but are inadequate to describe the impact this man, born as Edson Arantes do Nascimento, made as an ambassador for sport, Brazil and the world. → STORY

THANKFUL FOR THIS
Raise your hand if you have stepped on a LEGO brick. One of the more underrated sources of every day pain and one that typically involves a “ouch dance” which often leads to stepping on another LEGO. I can only imagine the hazards this couple must face. Meet Mike Adams and his wife Catherine Weightman who construct a LEGO masterpiece each Christmas. This year’s masterpiece is a fireplace with Santa’s legs sticking out and a 7-foot tall Christmas tree. It took nearly 400,000 pieces.

ON THIS DATE – BEFORE THE BROADWAY JOE GUARANTEE
Before Joe Namath became a New York icon, the Jets had to advance to the Super Bowl and they did so with a 27-23 triumph against the Oakland Raiders in the 1968 AFL title game at Shea Stadium. Namath threw for three touchdowns and Don Maynard caught six passes for 118 yards with two touchdowns for the Jets. Oakland’s Daryle Lamonica went 20-47 for 401 yards and a touchdown in the loss.

WHAT I WATCHED
One of my favorite discoveries 50 years ago when the world shut down was the movie “Knives Out”, starring Daniel Craig. The film reminded me of an updated Agatha Christie thriller penned after several cases of Red Bull. I finally watched “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” and thoroughly enjoyed it. Great pace and intrigue and Craig, David Bautista, Edward Norton and Kate Hudson deliver quality performances. Check it out. It’s streaming now exclusively on Netflix.

QUOTABLE
“It’s a dangerous thing to mistake speaking without thought for speaking the truth.”
