Top-5 Mac Musings – July 24, 2025
Nothing quite reminds you about your age quite like one of your contemporaries passing away. Malcolm-Jamal Warner drowned Sunday after being overwhelmed by strong currents while on vacation in Costa Rica. He was 54.
I welcomed Theo Huxtable and family into my home every Thursday on the groundbreaking Cosby Show from 1984 until 1992. It was remarkable to watch him grow up as the seasons progressed as his maturity in some ways reflected mine. There were a few notable differences… he was growing up in New York City, while I was growing up in tiny Kalama, Washington, population 1,112 after Old Man Johnson passed away.
At nine years old, his character was the first black teenager I was exposed to portrayed in a positive way. Far different than what was shown on local nightly news. To further confirm my nerd status, I bought his autobiography – “Theo and Me: Growing Up OK” where, surprisingly to me, he talked about issues similar to what I was going through and the general awkwardness of being a teenager.
An electric talent with incredible wit gone far too soon.
And now onto my Top-5 Musings for Friday, July 25, 2025.
- One of the most baseball-y things ever. I am a long-suffering Detroit Tigers fan… I blame Tom Selleck on Magnum P.I. It has been a great year to be a fan, but the offense since the All-Star break has been… problematic? The Tigers are 1-6 (as of 7/25/25) have scored 13 runs, been shut out twice and outscored by 22 runs.
- Everything is fine, though. <insert .gif of Sheldon breathing into a paper bag here>
- After posting my first edition of Mac Musings, I rewatched the classic “Better Off Dead”… 40 (!!) years later, the line: “Sorry your mom blew up, Ricky…” still slays me.
- After much soul searching I have decided Deadpool is my favorite superhero.
- This is one of the most uplifting things I’ve watched recently and something we need more of. The sooner the better. Also… Toto remains awesome!
