WEEKEND MUSINGS

WEEKEND MUSINGS

Top-5 Mac Musings – August 9, 2025

Look!! Here comes the Friday news dump!

WEEKEND MUSINGS
Welcome to a special Saturday edition of Mac Musings, made necessary because I was unable to pull anything together Friday. Why? Oh the usual… The dog ate my homework, my computer crashed, etc.

Everyone likes a bonus, so here is my attempt to make your weekend just a bit brighter.

Thursday I wrote about my comfort movies and as soon as I clicked publish, I thought of at least five or six more that could have made a list so, prepare yourself… Another list is inbound!

Bonus additional top-5 comfort movies I forgot to consider in Thursday’s column. These definitely have good triumphs over evil themes, which appeals to me more and more.

If you see these guys in a casino… know that the heist is on! (Not pictured: the other six.)
  1. Return of the Jedi
  2. Ocean’s 11
  3. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
  4. Definitely, Maybe
  5. Notting Hill

Those that work in media are very familiar with the “Friday News Dump”. It seems as though more and more companies are also adopting this approach when sending rejection letters to job applicants. It’s always nice to get a couple of those at 4:30 p.m. Friday to really usher in the weekend properly. Ugh.

Enough of that for now, though. We made it to the weekend, you lucky so and so’s. A fresh canvas just waiting to be painted.

Now, go get ’em… Seize the weekend.

And now onto my Top-5 Musings for Saturday, August 9, 2025.

  1. I watched a bit of the Lions first preseason game last night. So nice to see football again, but such a stark reminder of just how fragile life can be.
  2. With the Lions leading Atlanta to start the fourth quarter, free agent cornerback Morice Norris suffered a serious neck injury and was taken off the field in an ambulance. Detroit and the Falcons elected to run out the clock.
  3. Fortunately, Norris was showing signs of movement and last night shared on social media that he was able to move his extremities and declared, “I’m all good”. The incident immediately reminded me of another Lion who was carried off the field – former Washington State All-American Mike Utley, who was paralyzed in a November game in 1991. While being carried off the field on a stretcher, his thumbs up to the crowd was a truly goosebump moment.
  4. Yesterday while doing some work at my dad’s house, one of my tasks was to clean out a storm drain. I know this may shock you, but it immediately reminded me of a movie. Specifically the scene in Christmas Vacation where Cousin Eddie is emptying the RV septic into a storm drain.
  5. Speaking of Randy Quaid… let’s go around the table… is he a bigger lunatic in real life or on screen like his role in Independence Day?

Bonus Top-5 “Action-movies-you-don’t-need-to-pay-much-attention-to-enjoy”

  1. Deadpool
  2. Anything with Gerard Butler in it.
  3. Spaceballs
  4. Austin Powers – The Spy Who Shagged Me
  5. Starship Troopers

Passages: Before I go, I wanted to acknowledge the passing of an American icon. Jim Lovell, legendary NASA astronaut and commander of the harrowing Apollo 13 mission, died Friday, August 8 at the age of 97. Celebrated for his calm leadership under pressure, Lovell’s legacy endures as a symbol of ingenuity, courage, and the human drive to explore beyond Earth.

QUOTABLE
“You’re still here? It’s over. Go home! Oh, you’re expecting a teaser for Deadpool 2?? Well, we don’t have that kind of money. What are you expecting, Sam Jackson to show up with an eyepatch and a saucy little leather number? Go, go.”
