UNLIMITED “LIMITED SERIES”

Top-5 Mac Musings – August 21, 2025

UNLIMITED “LIMITED SERIES”
Discovering a new series to binge on Netflix, Prime or HBOMax/HBO/Max/HBOMax makes the day much brighter. Yesterday I discussed my fondness for “Rewatchable” content – movies I have seen over and over (and over and over) again.

You’re not going to believe this, but I do the same thing with “Limited Series”. The pattern is consistent: I discover a new series. Then I rewatch the series. Repeatedly.

In fairness, labeling pretty much anything a “limited edition” or “limited series” will make it pretty much irresistible to me. Like a moth to a flame. Unless it is cauliflower or broccoli or it stars Kevin Sorbo… in which case I am out… way, way out.

Here is what I define as a limited series, just to avoid confusion. A limited series, also known as a miniseries, is a television program with a predetermined number of episodes that tells a complete, self-contained story.

This is why I won’t be discussing some of my favorite streaming series: Ted Lasso, Jack Ryan, Reacher, Shrinking, The Diplomat, The Night Agent, The Rookie, The Recruit, Kleo, Call My Agent, Lupin, Bosch, etc. Stay alert, these will be discussed. Keep checking this space!

Idris Elba is electric in Hijack.

My Top-5 Most Rewatched Limited Series

  1. Band of Brothers, HBO
  2. Queen’s Gambit, Netflix
  3. Bodyguard, Netflix
  4. Fool Me Once, Netflix
  5. Hijacked, AppleTV

My Most Recent “Limited Discovery”
Butterfly, starring Danie Dae Kim (Prime)

Synopsis: David Jung is a former U.S. intelligence operative who lives in South Korea; his past soon comes back to haunt him as a sinister spy organization sends a sociopathic agent to kill him.

Mac Musings for Thursday, August 21.

Smoke and Stack are mesmerizing in Sinners.
    1. I rewatched the movie Sinners last night. The more I watch the more blown away I am. Just a remarkable achievement for the Michael B. Jordan/Ryan Coogler collaboration. I can’t speak for the rest of you, but I was not making Oscar-worth movies in my 30s.
    2. Delroy Lindo continues to remind me why he is one of my favorite actors. Just a sensational talent who steals almost every scene he is in regardless of who he is sharing the screen with. And now, my favorite Lindo roles, no particular order.
      • Bo Catlett, Get Shorty
      • Paul, Da 5 Bloods
      • Delta Slim, Sinners
      • Woody, Crooklyn
      • Satchel Page, Soul of the Game
    1. Watching Daniel Dae Kim shine in Daisy, a series he also produced, really showcases his acting ability and action credentials in a way he was never able to on Hawaii 5-0. The action sequences he pulls off at 56 (!) is pretty impressive.
    2. Yes, I am aware stunt doubles and CGI are used in many action movie sequences.
    3. Speaking of stuntmen… I watched The Fall Guy movie a couple of weeks ago. I grew up watching the Lee Majors series on TV – but only when I could sneak upstairs to watch it past my bedtime – and loved the energy Ryan Gosling adds to the role… which naturally leads me to my top-5 favorite Gosling roles, no particular order:
      • Jacob Palmer, Crazy, Stupid Love
      • Holland March, The Nice Guys
      • Colt Seavers, The Fall Guy
      • Gered Bennet, The Big Short
      • Courtland Gentry, The Gray Man
